Advantages of Lithium-Ion Batteries
There was a recent study by FleetCarma which looked at the performance of electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt in cold winter weather. What the study found is that even extreme freezing temperatures didn’t keep the Nissan Leaf from achieving maximum performance. We attribute the Leaf’s cold weather performance to the efficient lithium ion battery that comes equipped in the EV. However, the ability to perform in any weather is just one of the many advantages of lithium ion batteries. Let’s take a look at some other benefits of the battery.
First off, lithium-ion batteries are low maintenance which cannot be said for other EV batteries such as nickel-metal hydrides. There is no memory or cycling required to prolong the battery’s life. Other batteries often have to be unplugged to ensure that they don’t exhibit the memory effect, but that’s not necessary with a lithium-ion battery.
Perhaps the greatest benefit, however, is the greater energy density that can be found in lithium-ion batteries. Essentially, the higher energy density allows the lithium-ion battery to hold a larger charge for longer. It’s for this reason that lithium-ion battery-powered EVs tend to have a longer range than EVs that are equipped with a nickel-metal hydride battery.
The one disadvantage of lithium-ion batteries is that they are typically more expensive than other batteries on the market. However, when you take into account the fact that they are basically maintenance free and are able to travel further, the price is definitely worth it.
If you’re looking for a lithium-ion-equipped EV, we highly suggest that you check out the Nissan Leaf, which is one of the top-performing EVs currently on the market. Be sure to check out the graph to the left to see exactly how well it performed in a range of temperatures. The graph is from the FleetCarma study on EV performance.
Although the performance was not as great in colder weather, the Leaf was still able to achieve impressive ranges in colder weather. Other EVs like the Chevy Volt aren’t even able to run exclusively on the battery in cold temperatures. The internal combustion engine kicks in at temperatures lower than 25 degrees. That just goes to show how great the Nissan Leaf is.
There are a lot of advantages of lithium-ion batteries, and benefits of owning a Nissan Leaf, such as the opportunity to utilize Nissan EV Quick Charge Stations.
